The 4 Powers of Consistency: We’re all aware of what we need to do to get results. Whatever goals we have for our business or our chosen discipline, and regardless of our capabilities, consistency is needed to achieve them. It is the secret ingredient: Being consistent in what you do is key to developing skills, maintaining expertise, and ultimately, enjoying success. There are many reasons for this, but here are my initial thoughts on the top four powers of consistency.

Consistency develops routine

Developing good habits and productive routines are vital to doing anything well. It really doesn’t matter whether you want to create a healthier lifestyle or a more efficient work style, being consistent will get you there. If you don’t commit to consistent action, you can never make sustainable change or progress. By being disciplined and consistent, you’re giving yourself the best possible advantage.

Consistency builds expertise

In his bestselling book “Outliers”, Malcolm Gladwell asserts that to become an expert it takes 10,000 hours (or approximately 10 years) of deliberate practice. Constant efforts to improve and daily practice builds not only experience but incredibly fine-tuned expertise. Without consistency, no level of excellence can be achieved. In the words of Aristotle: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act but a habit.”

Consistency breeds confidence 

Consistency is a self-fulfilling cycle: being consistent brings results and good results breed confidence. This also makes us steely in the face of the inevitable challenges we will face. The willpower we develop through consistent action also helps us to keep moving forward in times of adversity. Confidence is at the core of any great performance.

Consistency wins trust

Reliably and continuously delivering according to your clients’ requirements helps ensure their loyalty and wins their trust. There is no other way to be taken seriously than to be completely consistent in your values, actions, methods, and communication. When people know what you stand for and exactly what you can for them, they will be able to put their trust in you.
