Flight Operations to Shanghai: Planning a flight to Shanghai? Here are the must-have Ops info and restrictions. 

Cargo Facts Asia takes place at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport from April 25-26. Here’s the critical operational information for operations to Shanghai.

Operational Restriction
  • From/to the East or Northeast direction: No take-off or landing is allowed

  • Slots for business jets are not available in ZSSS during 0700L-2159L/2300UTC-1359UTC (new restriction from February 22)
  • Chinese registered aircraft can park for 5 days
  • Foreign registered aircraft can park for 3 days
Operational Information 
  • Overflight and landing permits are required for all private flights to ZSPD, ZSSS, ZSNJ, and ZSHC
  • Overflight and landing permits are required for all commercial and non-commercial flights to ZSPD, ZSSS, ZSNJ, and ZSHC
  • Overflight permit lead-time is 24-48 hours
  • Landing permit lead-time is three working days
  • If you’re not part of the static display, you need to park at Pudong (ZSPD), Nanjing (ZSNJ) or Hangzhou (ZSHC)

Note: 

  • Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (IATA: HGH, ICAO: ZSHC) is approximately a one and a half hour drive from Shanghai
  • Nanjing Lukou International Airport (IATA: NKG, ICAO: ZSNJ) is approximately a two-hour drive from Shanghai
  • ZSNJ and ZSHC are Airports of Entry (AOEs), but support services at ZSHC are more limited. Neither airport requires slots
  • Both have high-speed train access to Shanghai. From ZSNJ it takes two hours, from ZSHC it takes about an hour
  • ZSNJ and ZSHC are in the proximity of some good options for hotel accommodation, as well as local transport options
Immigration

Shanghai applies a policy of 144-hour transit (Country A – China – Country B) stay visa free of charge. However, it is only available for passengers and not for crew. Transit passengers successfully applying for 144-hour visa exemption transits are allowed to stay within the restricted administration precincts including Shanghai municipality, Jiangsu Province, and Zhejiang Province for any amount of time under 144 hours.

The policy is applicable to the passengers who hold the following passports:

  • 23 European countries with Schengen Visa Agreement: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, German, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden.
  • 13 other European countries: Russia, Britain, Ireland, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, and Albania.
  • 6 American countries: United States of America, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Chile.
  • 2 Oceanian countries: Australia and New Zealand.
  • 6 Asian countries: Korea, Japan, Singapore, Brunei, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.

Currency: The currency in China is CNY/RMB.

Transportation: Taxis and buses are available at all airports.
