How to Get Ahead in Your Chosen Career: As a Co-Owner, Co-Founder, and CEO of a global organisation, as well as a keen observer of others, I have developed a strong instinct and capability to identify the people who will be the most successful entrepreneurs, leaders, and employees. Here are my top four tips to ensure you get ahead, no matter what career or in what industry you choose.

Love your job

The career you pursue is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. When you think of the time investment required to excel at anything in life, you see why it is so crucial to ensure that you love what you do. Make sure you are passionate about the industry in which you choose to work and that you also choose a role that excites you and motivates you. Remember that you will spend a massive amount of your life at work, but only you can decide if it feels like work or not.

Absorb all aspects of the business

It’s vital to remember that while specialisation is necessary, it is also massively important to gain a thorough understanding of how the entire industry operates. Understand how the different roles within the industry support each other’s functions. Constantly read the latest industry news regarding product launches, regulatory changes, etc. even if they do not have an immediate impact in your area. The more knowledge you have, the better you will perform and the more innovative you will become in your role.

Empathise with your colleagues and clients

Regardless of the industry in which you operate, strong and trustworthy relationships are the most important basis for business success. Great communication, rapport-building, and empathising with external entities such as vendors, customers, and partners means you can better understand their needs and concerns, and therefore exceed their expectations. Empathising with your management and colleagues will help you to be a better team member and more effective in your position.

Find a way

Throughout my career, I’ve interviewed, managed, and done business with countless professionals and I’ve noticed that what separates the outstanding from the regular is a willingness to do more and to go the extra mile to realise their objectives. This means resourcefulness and resilience: If one course of action fails, try another. If that fails, try a different approach. It’s about always finding a way to make things happen and not being diminished by inevitable failures along with way.
